Assignment #2 - Blog Entry #1 - The Kent State Protest

Protest Turned Tragedy  The late 60s and early 70s was a time for a calling of peace. The younger generation were notably known for their loud voices, powerful marches, and contagious messages. During this period, there was a spark in the Anti-War Movement where younger individuals protested against the deployment of more American troops to avoid more casualties. On top of casualties, there was a universal theme of "peace" to help dissolve global conflict and end armed warfare. To narrow down on a crucial event that catalyzed the movement for anti-war, students from Kent State University held a protest with a mission to put a halt to President Nixon's operation to deploy more troops in Cambodia during the Vietnam War.  Through loud marches, powerful signs and piercing voices, students were peacefully expressing their strong feelings against increased American involvement in the Vietnam War. They were emphasizing the need for peaceful negotiation and a decrease in war-tec...

Assignment #1 - Blog Entry #2 -

One idea I had for the change of the character would be to not modify Shirley as an individual, however, change her backstory. Part of Shirley’s grit and fiery attitude comes from her past toxic relationship, in which her ex-husband cheated on her for a prostitute. What if that never happened? From there, Shirley would’ve never really had to go along life on her own and would’ve actually had a happy family. This wouldn’t really eliminate the stereotype. Another possible rewrite can be the addition of a man. A man to balance out this stereotype to mask the inequalities between genders. This man can possibly have an equal chance of opportunity with Shirley to showcase that people get to where they are for their hard work and dedication and not their past. Essentially, another idea out ...

Assignment #1 - Blog Entry #1 - Problematic Positive Stereotypes in "Community"

Hello everyone! For the first writing assignment of the semester, I will be portraying problematic positive stereotypes with the support of the 2009 American sitcom, Community. This show was about a diverse group of individuals who come together as a Spanish study group and go on wild adventures. As we are all adjusting to college life and all its intricacies, I feel like Community was a gold mine for stereotypes and decently portrays the overgeneralization of different types of people.  For the focus of this assignment, I will be digging deeper into the character of Shirley Bennet, the motherly figure of the entire series that ties the show together.  Shirley was a middle-aged African American mother of two kids who attended Greendale Community College in hopes of obtaining a business degree to open her own restaurant. She possessed this very positive aura and was probably the most positive influence in the study group. I believe Shirley fits the positive stereotype of mothe...
